KOTA KINABALU, June 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reminded Malaysians not to become caught up in narratives or actions that divide people along racial, regional and religious lines.
Speaking at the National Unity Week celebration here today, he called on Malaysians to remain vigilant against factors that could undermine national unity among the country’s diverse communities.
“Do not be careless with matters that can fracture unity,” he said, adding that nation-building requires patience, wisdom and mutual understanding as different communities progress at varying paces.
Anwar paid tribute to founding leaders such as Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Mustapha Harun, noting that their vision for a united Malaysia was forged with clarity of purpose despite complex social realities and without the benefit of modern theoretical frameworks.
“They had a strong sense of purpose and collective spirit that embraced all communities, including minorities,” he said.
Describing Malaysia as an “imagined community” shaped by shared aspirations, he said early leaders from places such as Kapit, Keningau and Manik Urai envisioned a united future despite limited exposure to the wider world.
However, he cautioned against prioritising narrow ethnic interests over national identity, questioning whether the country could be defended by focusing solely on individual communities.
“Sowing hatred is disrespectful and dangerous,” he said.
Drawing on Islamic teachings, Anwar said diversity in race, language and culture is part of divine design meant to foster understanding and appreciation among people.
He stressed that unity requires continuous effort and maturity, noting that it is easier to destroy than to build.
Acknowledging criticism he has faced, Anwar said inclusivity should not be seen as a weakness but as a strength essential to Malaysia’s future.
