GEORGE TOWN, June 10 — Penang has rolled out its first official durian-themed tourism package in Hong Kong, marking a major step forward in the state’s bid to boost its international tourism profile and promote its signature durian experiences.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the initiative, a collaboration between Tourism Malaysia’s Hong Kong office, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) and Wing On Travel, aims to draw more Hong Kong tourists through a travel package built entirely around Penang’s celebrated durian industry.
“Hong Kong remains one of Penang’s key international visitor markets, with travellers from the city known for their appreciation of culinary experiences, cultural heritage and immersive travel offerings. This collaboration represents a milestone for Penang tourism.
“For the first time, we are packaging one of Penang’s most distinctive seasonal attractions, which is our world-renowned durian, into a dedicated tourism experience specifically tailored for the Hong Kong market,” he said in a statement released during the launch in Hong Kong today.
Wong said Penang’s durian tourism sector has evolved beyond the consumption of the fruit into a distinctive experiential product that combines gastronomy, nature and local culture.
Visitors are increasingly seeking activities such as durian buffets and countryside experiences in Balik Pulau, the only place in Malaysia where durians are cultivated on an island.
The newly introduced five-day Penang Culinary and Sightseeing Durian Feast Tour offers visitors luxury accommodation, unlimited durian tasting sessions, orchard visits and tours to key attractions including George Town, the Street Art Trail, Clan Jetties, Kampung Agong, Penang Hill, Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery and Penang Ferry Museum.

Wong added that the initiative supports preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026).
Ongoing collaborations between PGT and Tourism Malaysia are expected to boost visitor arrivals from Hong Kong and further position Penang as a leading experiential tourism destination in Asia. — Bernama
